Seiko’s 145 Anniversary Gilded Quartet, Time-Only to Chronograph
Appealing iterations of bestsellers.
Seiko founder established a watch store in Tokyo’s Ginza district in 1881, and for the occasion the watchmaker has unveiled a quartet of 145th anniversary watches representing the best of its affordable offerings. While each model is different, all share gilded elements as a unifying motif.
The collection is led by a pair of three-hand watches, the King Seiko KS1969 SJE121 and Presage Classic Series “Craftsmanship” Enamel Dial SPB538.
While the two three-hand editions are arguably the more interesting of the 145th anniversary line-up, the collection also includes a pair of chronographs, the automatic Prospex Speedtimer SRQ059 and solar-powered Astron GPS SSH186.

Initial thoughts
Seiko rolls out numerous anniversary watches on a frequent basis, so the anniversary theme itself isn’t a big deal. The 145th anniversary models, however, are appealing in themselves, especially the pair of three-hand models. The top-of-the-line anniversary edition is the King Seiko KS1969, which is far more striking than the regular production model, and certainly worth the modest premium in price.

The Presage, on the other hand, is another iteration of the early-wristwatch-style case that Seiko has done before, but not that often. Gold plating is not appropriate on an expensive watch, but the Presage is affordable so it gets a pass. The enamel dial and cuff-style strap are a nice touch that gives the watch a surprisingly vintage feel.

The pair of chronographs, on the other hand, represent two distinct strands of Seiko’s stopwatch specialty. One is pure-play mechanical and the other is solar-powered tech. Both are excellent in terms of price-performance ratio, though the automatic Speedtimer is more interesting for the watch enthusiast. The Astron GPS has impressive tech, but this version looks overdressed in high contrast black and gold.

Gold accents
The King Seiko KS1969 145th Anniversary SJE121 featured a dial stamped with a radial pattern inspired by the engine turned cases of the pocket watches sold by Kintaro Hattori in his Ginza store in the late 19th century; he initially sold imported watches before producing his own starting in 1895. Finished in a graduated grey that darkens towards the edges, the dial is matched with gold plated hands and indices.
The rest of the watch is identical to the regular production King Seiko KS1969 that’s modelled on a 1969 model. This means the polished steel case is compact and thin, while the movement is the 6L35 automatic. It’s matched with a vintage-inspired “beads of rice” style bracelet.

Going even further back in Seiko’s history is the Presage Classic Series “Craftsmanship” Enamel Dial 145th Anniversary SPB538. This takes its cues from the pocket watch model Kintaro Hattori produced in 1895, known as the “Timekeeper”, which was no frills but a landmark in Japanese watchmaking.
Seiko has made several models in this style, but the SPB538 is the first to feature a gold-plated case. The case has an onion crown and knurled bezel, replicating elements of the pocket watch, along with wire-style lugs that characterised the earliest wristwatches of the 20th century.
The dial is fired enamel, while the movement is modern and high spec, being both automatic and featuring a three-day power reserve. Because the movement is relatively thick, the Presage is a tall 12.3 mm high, which is a little much for the 35 mm case.

Chronographs
The collection is rounded off by a pair of chronographs with similar gilded accents.
The first is automatic and mechanical, the Prospex Speedtimer SRQ059. The dial is stamped guilloche with gold-plated hands and indices that give it a vintage feel, though the case size is a large 42 mm by 14.6 mm. It’s powered by the 8R48, a calibre with vertical clutch and column wheel that Seiko employs in its mid- to high-end offerings.

The second is also a chronograph but high tech: the Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph SSH186 is solar powered and multifunction. Amongst other things it can sync with a GPS satellite for automatic time and time zone adjustment, while also having a perpetual calendar and world time. This features a black-coated titanium case and bracelet with gold accents, a colour combination that continues on the dial.
