Baselworld is still a good three months away but Omega is already offering a peek at what it has in store with a pair of new Speedmaster watches (that come just days after the online-only Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday). First up is the Speedmaster Automatic “Racing”.

The black and orange dial is characterised by square orange accents for the hours and alternating minute hash marks, a look typical of the 1970s nicknamed “Racing”. The very same style was also revived for the Omega Speedmaster Mark II of 2014.

Despite the retro vibes the Speedmaster Automatic is tangibly modern. The arrowhead hour markers are 18k white gold, while the 44.25mm steel case features a black ceramic bezel. And the calibre 9900 inside has all of Omega’s latest technology, including exceptional level of magnetism resistance, a silicon hairspring, and METAS certification.

The Speedmaster Automatic “Racing” (ref. 304.32.44.51.01.001) is priced at SFr7800 or S$11,700. It will be available sometime in late 2017.

One of the few Speedys designed for ladies, the Speedmaster 38 Cappucino is two-tone: the 38mm case is stainless steel while the bezel, crown and pushers are 18k Sedna gold, the fade-resistant gold alloy proprietary to Omega. The outer rim of the bezel is set with diamonds, while the inner track is inlaid with a brown aluminium tachymetre insert.

The colour scheme continues on the cream dial that has ovoid brown sub-dials, while the hands and hour markers are also 18k Sedna gold. Inside is the calibre 3330, Omega’s basic in-house chronograph movement that features the friction-free Co-Axial escapement and a magnetism-resistant silicon hairspring.

The Cappuccino is the first of a new line of ladies’ Speedmasters, but the 38mm case is not new. Having been introduced sometime in the 1990s the Speedmaster “Reduced”, as it was then known, existed in various guises as both a men’s and ladies’ watch.

The Speedmaster 38 Cappuccino (ref. 324.28.38.50.02.002) is priced at SFr8600 or S$12,900.

Appealingly sporty and relatively affordable – the basic version sells for just over US$5000 or S$7000 – the Carrera Heuer-01 is TAG Heuer‘s bestselling chronograph. Previously only available in steel, titanium or gold, the Heuer-01 is now available entirely in black ceramic.

The case middle, bezel and lugs are in smooth, sandblasted black ceramic, with the option of a matching ceramic bracelet. And as is typical for ceramic watches, the case back is black-coated steel, because ceramic doesn’t withstand torsional forces well so screws into a ceramic back are a bad idea.

Visually the ceramic Heuer-01 is nearly identical to the earlier versions, with a skeleton dial – also made of black ceramic – that exposes the mechanics of the movement, most notably the date mechanism and chronograph gears.

The self-winding Heuer-01 movement is visible under the sapphire back, with a red lacquered column wheel taking pride of place.

Price and availability

The Carrera Heuer-01 is available in two guises. The first is with a black ceramic bracelet (ref. CAR2A91.BH0742) priced at US$6300 or S$8650. And on a rubber strap (ref. CAR2A91.FT6071) it will cost US$6200 or S$8500.

Both will be available sometime in the first quarter of 2017 from TAG Heuer boutiques and retailers.
