Baselworld 2013: Breitling for Bentley Light Body Midnight Carbon

At the Geneva Motor Show underway now, Breitling announced the latest Breitling for Bentley watch, the Light Body Midnight Carbon. The 49 mm case is titanium with a black carbon coating. Compared to many of the earlier Breitling for Bentley watches which were large and shiny, this is positively quiet, perhaps reflecting a trend in car design as well.

Inside is the COSC-certified cal. 25B, which has a ETA 2892 base but with a chronograph module proprietary to Breitling. What makes it unusual is its 30-second chronograph: the central chronograph seconds makes one round in 30 seconds, instead of a minute. That means the watch can record up to 1/8 of a second. Also, the knurled bezel – inspired by the radiator grilles of vintage Bentleys – is rotatable and functions as a variable tachymeter.

Unlike regular tachymeters which are fixed scales calibrated for times of under 60 seconds, this variable tachymeter can measure average speeds regardless of the time elapsed, the distance covered or the speed reached. This is limited to 1000 pieces. – SJX

Baselworld 2013: Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Seconde Mystérieuse

Maurice-Lacroix-Masterpiece-Seconde-MystC3A9rieuse1

Maurice Lacroix has just announced the Masterpiece Seconde Mystérieuse with an unusual mystery seconds. Seemingly floating against a stark white sub-dial, the seconds hand rotates on its own axis, around the seconds sub-dial.

The skeletonised ML215 movement is developed and made in-house, though I believe it uses the gear train of the Unitas 6498. The case is 43 mm and available in steel or black PVD coated steel. The movement finish matches the case, so the steel version rhodium plated bridges while for the black PVD version the finish is ruthenium.

Each version is limited to 125 pieces. The estimated retail price in Singapore is S$17,500, which is equivalent to about US$14,200. – SJX
