First Look: Seiko 5 Sports Field Series
The best starter watch gets better.
Seiko is reinforcing its entry level collection with the 5 Sports Field Series, a range of new models with compass bezels available in a range of dial colours from instrument-like white to brown, which seems to be a popular colour at the moment.
While substantively similar to existing Seiko 5 Sports models and equally well priced, the Field Series watches feature serrated compass bezels with a glittering hobnail motif that is both functional — for enhanced grip — and attractive.

Initial thoughts
The Seiko 5 Sports collection is perhaps the ultimate gateway to watch collecting. It’s the rare entry level watch that could be someone’s last watch as easily as their first. Not everyone is a collector, and some people just want a watch that does what is asked without asking for much in return. The Seiko 5 Sports fits the bill, while opening the door to the larger world of mechanical watches.

The Seiko 5 is tangibly appealing in several respects, being one of the most affordable mechanical watches from a fully integrated manufacture. With Seiko, there’s no wondering who made what — the brand even formulates its own luminous compound for the hands, hour markers, and bezel pip instead of relying on the same suppliers as everyone else.
Seiko also understands the aesthetic history of the wristwatch because the brand helped write it. This explains some of the subtle details like the tiny serifs on the hour markers.

Of course, it’s not a perfect watch — there’s no such thing — and there are a few things I’d change if I could, like the cursive ‘automatic’ script on the dial and the use of the brand’s proprietary Hardlex mineral crystal as opposed to sapphire crystal. But the list of complaints is short and the price is accessible, which makes it an appealing buy in its category.

Bracelet or strap
There are two different strap option for the Field Series — a three-link Oyster-style bracelet for the HDB006 and HDB007, and dial-matched nylon straps for the HDB006 and HDB007. At this price point, the bracelet construction is necessarily economical, but smartly designed.

For example, the design features female end links to enhance the drape of the bracelet. This format helps minimise the effective lug-to-lug length, which is 48.5 mm on paper. But with female end links, the articulation of the bracelet begins at the spring bar axis, which should help the 41 mm case size wear quite easily on most wrists.
The bigger factor might be the weight. The stainless steel bracelet nearly doubles the weight of the watch, which is 85 g on a strap and 158 g on the bracelet. Of course, some collectors love this amount of heft, but even if the extra weight is unwelcome, the bracelet only adds €20 to the price and the convenient 20 mm lug spacing means that all four models will easily accommodate most third-party straps. The drilled lug holes make strap changes a breeze, even for inexperienced collectors.

An economical in-house movement
The cal. 4R36 is a no-nonsense automatic movement made in large numbers — it’s even available to third-party brands as the cal. NH36. As such, it’s well known to watchmakers the world over, and inexpensive enough to insulate buyers from a costly repair bill should anything go wrong.

These appealing characteristics help offset the less impressive details of the movement, like its short 41-hour power reserve and relatively slow 3 Hz rate. That said, the calibre can be hand wound, and since the Seiko 5 lacks a screw-down crown, it’s easy enough to overcome the short power reserve with a few quick twists of the crown each morning.
