G-Shock Teams Up with Streetwear Label Undefeated

A limited edition to mark 40 years.

Streetwear label Undefeated has joined forces with Casio to create the G-Shock x Undefeated DW6900UDCR23-5. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the shock-resistant watch, the limited edition is based on the instantly recognisable DW-6900 and gives the chunky case a facelift in brown, yellow, and vibrant blue, a palette typical of the urban streetwear aesthetic of Los Angeles-based label that has worked with brand including Adidas and Nike.

Initial thoughts

In the current horological landscape, watch brands from all across the price spectrum are actively forging partnerships with a range of streetwear brands, including the audacious and boundary-pushing Franck Muller #FR2. G-Shock, however, was a pioneer in this space and continues to push forward with the collaborative trend. Though no longer that novel, the convergence of watches and urban fashion continues to captivate enthusiasts, particularly when the tie-ups make sense, as this one does.

A riff on a familiar G-Shock model, the Undefeated edition makes great use of yellow and dark brown tones, giving it a look uncommon in G-Shocks. At the same time, the DW-6900 is delivered with a bonus NATO strap in addition to the standard resin strap, setting it apart from the usual array of G-Shocks.

Priced affordably at just US$190, the collaboration will available only in a “drop” on Undefeated’s website. Although the number of pieces is undisclosed, G-Shock enthusiasts and streetwear aficionados will quickly snap them up.

Made for the streets

This latest collaboration between G-Shock and Undefeated is the brainchild of Eric Peng Cheng, a noted fashion impresario in streetwear and a renowned watch collector. Having become a partial owner of the Los Angeles-centred brand in 2018, he has spearheaded numerous collaborations for his label, encompassing notable names such as McLaren and Budweiser as well as watch brands including H. Moser & Cie. and Unimatic.

The limited edition is essentially a variant of the standard DW-6900, first introduced in 1995. Its rounded case design was quite large for its size on the wrist. But gradually, it transformed into a fashion statement in the realm of popular culture especially within the hip-hop community.

In this specific iteration, the dial has a vibrant yellow hue that’s enclosed within a brown (nearly blackish) resin case. The blue accents provide some visual contrast, including the iconic Undefeated logo replacing the customary Casio branding on the upper part of the dial. The logo lights up at nighttime, courtesy of the LED display’s backlight feature.

Additionally, it retains all the customary features characteristic of a G-Shock. It has a bulbous case measuring 53.2 mm in diameter and 16.3 mm high. Its internal electronic module and LCD display are powered by a quartz movement and have its usual standard functionalities, namely a stopwatch, calendar, countdown timer, and multiple time zones.

It will be available with a brown resin strap equipped with a buckle, alongside an extra black NATO strap with a sewn patch of the streetwear’s insignia.
