Jaeger-LeCoultre Brings Baguettes to the Reverso ‘Or Deco Cocktail’

Party in the front, business in the back.

Watch-spotting accounts on Instagram were rewarded during the Met Gala broadcast with a sneak peak at two new Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC) Reverso models worn by actors Finn Wolfhard and Tyriq Withers. Unveiled officially today, the Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds Or Deco Cocktail brings tasteful gemsetting to the Reverso.

Initial thoughts

Watch spotting has emerged as a major part of social media culture — a fact that has not escaped brands’ attention. Omega was early to the game, teasing the white-dialled Speedmaster on the wrist of Daniel Craig months before launch, and the brand equipped Delroy Lindo with the new Constellation Observatory at the Academy Awards two weeks before its official unveiling.

Now its JLC’s turn — today the brand is launching three gem-set Reversos first seen during the Met Gala earlier this month. Available in 18k white or pink gold, the new editions are elegant on the wrist thanks to their relatively compact footprint — just 45.6 mm tall — and supple gold Milanese bracelets.

Each watch is distinguished by bands of baguette-cut stones above and below the dial — replacing the typical Art Deco-style horizontal grooves — but only on the front. Flip the watch over, and it looks like any other Reverso with a solid case back.

A cynic might view this as a ploy to keep costs down — to some extent that’s true — but alternatively it gives a flamboyant watch a discreet alter ego that enhances the overall package. And cost-cutting is not a compelling justification, given the price is likely on the verge of six figures.

Baguettes in three colours

Each watch is an extension of the Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds released last year in 18k pink gold. That model debuted to widespread acclaim, thanks mainly to its impressive bracelet, which featured noble materials and fine construction.

This platform makes its return in 18k pink and white gold, with mirrored bands of vertically set baguette-cut stones in place of the Reverso’s signature grooved motif. The pink gold model features rubies, while the white gold livery can be had with emeralds or blue sapphires.

The vertical orientation of the stones mirrors the Reverso’s own upright case shape, and the way the setting curves around the sides of the case gives the watch a look quite different from that of a typical round watch with a baguette-set bezel.

It’s worth noting that while rubies and sapphires are hard stones unlikely to scratch, emeralds are another story. With their exposed placement, the green emeralds may be susceptible to scratches.

Fortunately, these flamboyant ‘cocktail’ watches can be flipped over for the walk home, keeping the stones out of sight and out of harm’s way – something not possible with most gem-set watches.

The dials of each watch are case-matched, with a richly grained finish. Like last year’s non-gem-set model, this gives each watch a monochromatic look that emphasises the glittering stones as the only point of contrast.

The adjustable mesh bracelet completes the ensemble, and gives what might otherwise be a delicate-feeling watch a sense of heft and gravitas, not to mention all-weather-wearability.

Familiar calibre

Each watch is powered by the lozenge-shaped cal. 822 — a tried and true workhorse movement that has powered Reversos for more than 30 years. That age explains the leisurely 3 Hz beat rate and middling 42-hour power reserve, but it was upgraded a few years ago with a free-sprung balance, bringing it in line with the brand’s other latest-generation calibres.

The short power reserve is one of those things that seems annoying on paper, but in reality owners may welcome it given the sensual winding feel of this class of Reverso calibres.
