The Breitling SuperOcean Upgraded to 1,000 m

The Superdiver in titanium.

Practically every brand with a significant offering of sports watches has a 1,000 m-or-deeper dive watch in its catalogue, and Breitling has one in its catalogue since 1983. The latest is the Superocean Automatic 46 Superdiver that features a titanium case water resistant to 1,000 m that also features a bezel-lock mechanism.

Initial thoughts

Breitling redesigned the Superocean two years ago, giving its line of dive watches a modern aesthetic with subtle vintage-inspired elements, distinguishing it from the vintage remakes common in this segment. Superocean Superdiver retains the same styling, but in a larger, higher-spec format. For someone who likes the earlier Superocean but found it too small or 300 m too modest – this is it.

As an aside, the camouflage-pattern dial is new for the Superocean line and feels unnecessary, though the pattern isn’t too obvious at a distance. Given Breitling’s regular cosmetic updates, a different dial style is likely on the cards.

Though the priciest Superocean at US$6,300 on a strap, the Superdiver is still equipped with an ETA 2892. That’s adequate but not really competitive at this price point given the superior movements found in most competing watches.

More variety

Having recently expanded three of its signature collections — Navitimer, AVI, and Avenger — Breitling now does the same for the Superocean, its longstanding line of dive watches. The current-generation Superocean draws inspiration from the 1960s Superocean Slow Motion Chronograph that has a distinctive two-tone dial with block-like hands and indices.

Now the flagship model of the line, the Superdiver is comparable in size to Superocean 46 mm introduced in 2022. Though similarly sized, the earlier 46 mm model is rated to 300 m like the rest of the line, while the Superdiver is water resistant to 1,000 m.

Because of the enhanced depth rating, the Superdiver is thicker at 14.5 mm, compared to just over 13.2 mm for the standard model. A consequence of both a thicker case and crystal, the height makes it extremely large, though not unusual amongst this type of dive watch. But because the Superdiver case is in titanium instead of steel, it is relatively lightweight.

Besides the increased depth rating, the Superdiver also gains a patented locking mechanism for the unidirectional bezel, which can be released with the slide located at nine o’clock on the case.

The bezel locking slide

The Superdiver retains the styling of the Superocean, with the same block hands and indices as well as a wide minute flange around the dial. Like the standard Superocean, the Superdiver has a ceramic bezel insert, except it sports a matte, brushed finish instead of the glossy finish found on the rest of the models.

Inside the Superdiver is the Breitling Calibre 10 that is also found in the Chronomat 36 Victoria Beckham. Based on the ETA 2892, Calibre 10 is basic, no-frills movement with a 42-hour power reserve that is nonetheless COSC-certified as a chronometer. Notably, the movement is protected from magnetism with a soft-iron cover within the case, a feature that is absent in the other Superocean models.
