Pastel Dials for the Parmigiani Tonda PF Sport Chronograph

Still guilloche and integrated calibre.

After unveiling the Tonda PF “No Date” earlier this year, Parmigiani continues to expand its line of sports watches, now with the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph in pastel shades of grey as well a “Milano Blue”, while retaining the clou triangulaire guilloché.

Initial thoughts

The Tonda PF Sport is a more elegant alternative to conventional sports chronographs. The guilloché dial is decorative but sporty with “panda” registers, while the case feels relatively slim. And the new dial colours add to the appeal, both by offering more variety and a less traditional palette.

The changes are only cosmetic, with the dial, case, and PF070 movement remaining the same. Consequently, the price remains rightly unchanged at CHF29,700 – a fair value proposition especially considering the specs and construction of the PF070.

New colourways

The latest models are fundamentally new variants of the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph released last year. They retain the same clean styling, with silvered dials and contrasting registers, a look historically associated with motor racing-inspired chronographs.

The dial includes the customary applied “PF” emblem at 12 and a date window between four and five. Although it contrasts against the dial, the date display is relatively discreet and coherent design-wise. The date numerals sits vertical in a square window, presumably to evoke a dashboard instrument panel.

The dial is decorated in the same guilloché found across the Tonda PF Sport line. Known as clou triangulaire (French for “triangular nail”), the engine turning is more modern than the classical barleycorn pattern found on the Tonda PF.

The latest models are presented in three colours, or more specifically, three sub-dial colours: “Milano Blue” and two pastel-toned variants, “Arctic Grey” that’s a light blue-grey, and “London Grey” that is taupe-like.

What notably sets the new dials apart is the flange around that dial that matches the sub-dials, unlike the earlier models that featured a silvered flange that blended into the dial.

Apart from the new dial colours, the watch remains virtually unchanged from the standard model. The steel case retains its distinctive knurled bezel and is accompanied by a textured rubber strap. The case measures 42 mm in diameter and 12.9 mm high.

Inside is the PF070 movement developed by movement specialist Vaucher, a sister company of Parmigiani.

Chronometer certified by COSC, the PF070 features a column wheel and vertical clutch like many modern movements. More notably, it has a long power reserve of 65 hours and a free-sprung balance running at a high frequency of 5 Hz, or 36,000 beats per hour.

Like most Parmigiani movements, the PF070 is finished well and largely by machine. The bridges have been open worked bridges to reveal the mechanics. Another decorative touch is the gilded rotor shaped like the steering wheel of the Ferrari 250 GTO.
