Independent Watchmaking Centre Stage at Phillips’ London Selling Exhibition

From March 15-21, 2019.

Phillips auctioneers’ impressive showroom on the edge of Berkeley Square in London’s Mayfair will soon be transformed into a platform for Well Suited, a selling exhibition focused on independent watchmaking. Headlined by a Philippe Dufour Simplicity (rose gold and 37mm for those wondering), the exhibition is a compact but outstanding assemblage of watches.

Spearheaded by Phillips’ London watch chief James Marks, the exhibition is made up of over two dozen watches including creations from Vianney Halter, Romain Gauthier, Ludovic Ballouard, F.P. Journe, and even a Grand Seiko 8 Days from the brand’s revered Micro Artist Studio. Several of the watches are first owner specimens fresh from the collection of one of the most important collectors of independent watchmaking in Asia. [Full disclosure: The author is a friend of the collector.]

The exhibition’s name is a result of Phillips’ collaboration with London tailors Thom Sweeney, whose founders Luke Sweeney and Thom Whiddett helped curate the exhibition.

The duo’s bespoke outfits will be on display, and more unusually, a temporary cutting room will be set up within the exhibition with tailors cutting patterns during the event.
